Art
aficionados strolled around
downtown
Lancaster’s galleries Friday night for a new event sponsored by the
Lancaster County Council of the Arts, called the Spring Arts Draw.
Art lovers checked out the unique vases by Ben Davison and the shadowy,
two-dimensional works of Michael Ehlbeck at the Springs House, home of
the Lancaster County Council of the Arts. Then it was on to Picture
Perfect on Catawba Street, where many shared a laugh with the owner of
the picture-framing business, Mark Plyler.
The tour continued at Stevens Pottery on Williams Street, home of Robert
Stevens’ “ugly face jugs” and antiques.
At Bob Doster’s Backstreet Studio and Gallery, art lovers got a chance
to meet “emerging” artist Savannah Cudd, whose show,
“Resurrection,” was on display. They also got a chance to listen to
bluegrass music in the garden.
But the obvious “draw” of the evening were the many works of art up
for grabs in a drawing at Chastain’s Studio Lofts on Main Street. The
air in the art studio and gallery was heavy with excitement, as Abby
Stogner, niece of the studio’s owner, Christina Chastain, drew names
from a wash tub.
The draw featured paintings by Caleb Miles, George Young and Chastain; a
limited edition sculpture, “Falling Leaves,” by Doster; an ugly face
jug by Stevens and other works by local artists. At the last minute,
Custom Beads owner Linda Meetze-Lucas donated a handmade necklace and
guitarist Ken Blinko, who performed at Chastain’s Friday night,
donated a guitar session to the draw.
The coveted piece in the draw was a Davison vase, painted in a turquoise
glaze. And when Sylvia Hudson’s name was drawn as the winner of the
prize, she made no attempt to hide her excitement. With a huge smile,
she walked up to the counter and hugged the beautiful vase.
“Awesome,” is how Chastain, also the gallery director and program
coordinator for the arts council, described the turnout for the arts
draw. Each person attending bought a $15 ticket (or $20 per couple), and
those tickets were entered into the drawing. The event raised $800 for
the arts council.
“We’d like to start doing these twice a year, if possible,” she
said.
