Kershaw to start
streetscape project
By Johnathan C. Ryan - Reporter The Lancaster News February 14, 2007
KERSHAW - The town of Kershaw has started planning for its next streetscape
project, which will be a continuation of street work seen in past ones.
More work will occur on downtown Kershaw's Hampton Street, this time
between Richland and Church streets, using a $200,000 federal TEA-21 grant
received last year and a $46,000 match from the town.
Town Administrator Tony Starnes said the project will be a continuation
of prior streetscape projects that occurred on the southern portion of
the street. There'll be new curbs and gutters, sidewalks and street and
pedestrian lights installed, as well as custom-designed landscaping and
road resurfacing.
There'll be no continuation of the street median since there is less
money available, Starnes said.
That's different from previous streetscape projects.
"There's not as much money. We just won't be as elaborate as
we were with the other block," he said.
While the amount of money for the project may seem like a lot
for only one block of work, Starnes said the money will go fast.
"It doesn't take long when you start to tear up the
sidewalk," he said.
At the Feb. 2 Town Council meeting, council voted
unanimously to accept Landplan as the design firm for the
project. The firm was responsible for designs on the last
streetscape project.
"They'll do the design work and then we'll put it out
for bids (get a contractor) in a month or two,"
Starnes said.
Work is expected to start in early summer and could be
done by Christmas. Starnes believes the project will be
completed relatively quickly compared to past streetscape
projects.
"We're not doing as much work as we did
before," he said.
The last streetscape project between Marion and
Richland streets included a decorative street median.
It cost $430,000.
There was concern that the project wouldn't be
finished before the town's annual Christmas parade
in 2005, as heavy rains causing delays to sidewalk
work, but it was.
